Pragmatics & Semantics: Semantically, the meaning of this advert is that you shouldn’t smoke as you wouldn’t want your children too. Pragmatically, the meaning could be that children generally look up to their parents as role models, therefore if they see their parents smoking, they might see this as a norm and begin to smoke themselves as that was the surroundings they were brought up in. Children are used as a manipulative tool to stop parents smoking.
Lexis: Low register, no use of latinate words or monosyllabic words as the target audience are people who may or may not be well educated. Qualifier ‘’today’’ creates a sense of urgency & hurry/ needs to be done soon to reduce any possible consequences. Pronoun - ‘’you’’ used twice in one sentence/ synthetic personalisation/ Fairclough’s theory.
Discourse structure: Follows a structure of problem solution. The problem is children taking on smoking and the solution is ‘quitting today’. Not a very clear discourse structure as there is limited lexis.
Graphology: Whole advert is in black and white other than the crayons - this draws attention to this part of the advert. It could also suggest that people who smoke need more colour in their life to fix their ‘problems’. The variety of colours reinforce this view. When the audience first few this advert, their attention is automatically drawn to the crayons which are stereotypically associated with children.
Grammar: Interrogative sentence - used to get the audience thinking.
The other sentence type used is an incomplete sentence which reinforces the low register of this text (non standard forms) - gets point across.
